The Highfields Rollers is a group of road cycling enthusiasts who came together in early 2007 to actively encourage all levels of riders (including newcomers) to our sport. All riders are welcome to join us on one of our rides*.
Those who ride with us vary from the very experienced to the novice. One of the formation member’s cycling achievements include twice Australian Road Champion (under 16 and Junior), Australian Cyclist Magazine Mockridge Medallist in July 1965, runner up to Australian Cyclist of the Year in 1967 and 46 times State Champion (in all divisions from under 16 to elite) on Road and Track.
Age and inexperience are never considered a barrier to entering cycling.
What we do ......
We wear Lycra, we meet for coffee ... and we enjoy each other’s company...
We ride whenever we can. However, we do have set ride times for those who like to have routine in their lives.
We produce a weekly email newsletter to provide those interested, with up to date information on proposed activities and to keep them abreast of latest developments in the world of cycling.
The newsletters often include:
-
hints for safe riding
-
reminders of the current Queensland road rules
-
equipment recommendations
-
pointers on correct nutrition
-
training ideas
-
reports on past rides, and
-
anecdotes pertaining to our group riders
What we don't do ......
We are not a club or incorporated body* and so:
-
We don't have a committee.
-
We don't pay membership fees.
-
We don't have formal meetings.
THE RIDES
Each Tuesday and Thursday, - depart from the Coles Car Park at 4 PM (Winter) and 5 PM (Spring to Autumn).
Saturdays: Currently the Saturday rides depart from and finish at La Fresco Restaurant on the highway. Depart at 6, 6.30 and 7AM. (later starts for winter)
The 6 AM departure is for those who are looking for a longer and faster ride. The routes vary each week and range from about 45 km up to 80+ km. The average speed of the 6 AM ride is about 27 - 30 kph.
The 6.30 AM departure is for those who prefer a shorter and somewhat more sedate ride, although riders on other than road bikes might find some difficulty keeping up with the pace. The average speed of the 6.30 AM ride is about 21- 25 kph.
Please Note: all Saturday rides will normally depart at 7 AM during July
Beginners and Juniors*: When numbers dictate, a third group departs at 7 AM. The purpose of this group is to introduce those new to the sport to road safety and bike handling skills.
The Beginners' and Juniors' Ride has proven very popular with riders from 9 years of age and upwards participating. All participants complete the Course together. Experienced cyclists accompany the Group at all times.
Sundays: Occasionally leaving at 6.30AM from La Fresco, this is a relaxed ride for all comers of about 50 km which includes a halfway rest break. Don't be shy.
Ride Routes: Generally the planned routes are advised to all HR riders in the weekly newsletter. This is especially so, for rides that are expected to extend over more than 50-60 km. Many of the rides have been formalised and mapped out. They can be seen by visiting MapMyRide
